For many, the best part of the Christmas season is all of the beautiful lights and decorations that go up seemingly every where, bringing cheer and good holiday spirit to all who look upon them. It’s a tradition that has gone on for time out of mind, since before there were strings of electric lights, plastic snowmen, and glowing, inflatable Santas.
The Bragg-Mitchell Mansion, decked out for the holidays in vintage style during the month of December each year, provides a look back to one of these earlier, simpler Christmas eras.
The grand, old Mobile mansion positively shines, decorated for Christmas as it would have been in the pre-Civil War era, the stunningly draped and bangled, 12-foot tree a perfect and memorable centerpiece, as always.
Guided tours of the Bragg-Mitchell Mansion – offered year-round – will transport you back to an era of gentlemen and ladies concerned with good manners and grace, proper bearing, and carefully considered finery, all especially resplendent during the Christmas season.
It is fitting that the Bragg-Mitchell Mansion should be so delightfully decorated and open to the public for the holidays, as it was originally built by the Judge for his wife and family to live in during Mobile’s social season: Thanksgiving through Mardi Gras.
The Bragg-Mitchell Mansion is a 13,000 square foot, Greek Revival home, built in the heart of the Oakleigh Garden District in 1855 by Judge John Bragg and restored and renovated back to that era as a historic house museum in the late 1980’s.
The Bragg-Mitchell Mansion is one of four, spectacular restored, house museums in historic Mobile, AL – along with the Richards DAR House, the Conde-Charlotte House, and the Oakleigh Historic Complex.
