The Gulf Coast Ethnic & Heritage Jazz Festival 2017

July 15th, 2017 by Corey A. Edwards

Gulf Coast Ethnic & Heritage Jazz Festival 2017The Gulf Coast Ethnic & Heritage Jazz Festival, scheduled for July 24th to August 12th, 2017, brings an eclectic lineup of world-renowned jazz artists and up-and-coming acts to Mobile, AL.

The Gulf Coast Ethnic & Heritage Jazz Festival (GCEHJF) is a collection of jazz-related events that span more than a month. This Gulf Coast tradition is all about spreading the message of jazz music to anyone and everyone with ears and a pulse.

Festival organizers are quick to point out that “ethnic” means everybody and “heritage” is not some fixed point in the past. Inclusion and appreciation is what it’s all about!

The Festival begins in July with Marcus Johnson Summer Jazz Camp, a dynamic, 10-day learning experience, focusing on the history and fundamentals of Jazz. Though primarily begun for school-aged players, students have ranged in age from 6 to seniors. The session is capped off with a Summer Jazz Camp Recital that may surprise you as much as it entertains. These “students” can really play!

The festival continues with Leonard Houston performing Bicycle Jazz at the OK Bicycle Shop on Mobile’s Dauphin Street. Huggy Bear da Poet will liven things up at the History Museum of Mobile, and August’s LODA Artwalk will be made complete with the sweet sounds of live Jazz. Jazz on the River winds things up with an evening of amazing Jazz at the Mobile Convention Center.
