What is there to see? Well, lots – but the biggest attraction has to be the USS Alabama.

The “Mighty A” USS Alabama

The USS Alabama (BB-60) is a South Dakota-class battleship, launched in 1942 and commissioned to serve in the Atlantic and Pacific theaters of WWII.

Known as the “Mighty A” and “Heroine of the Pacific,” the ship earned 9 Battle Stars for meritorious service and lead the American fleet into Tokyo Bay on September 5, 1945.

Visitors to Battleship Memorial Park can explore much of this historic ship. Self-guided tours will tke you through the engine rooms, the captain’s quarters, galley, crew quarters, and more. Each tour lasts around 30 minutes.

Other Park Attractions

The USS Alabama isn’t the only historic military vehicle in the park – not by a long shot!

One of the other big attractions is the USS Drum. The USS Drum (SS-228) is a WWII era submarine that served between 1942 and 1945. She is credited with sinking 15 ships during WWII, and received 12 battle stars.

The park also includes an aircraft pavilion. Inside you’ll find more than 25 historic planes and military vehicles. There’s also a memorial wall dedicated to all of Alabama’s Medal of Honor recipients.

More tanks, boats, vehicles, and artillery dot the grounds of Battleship Memorial Park. The park is also home to a variety of touching memorials. You’ll see a Korean Memorial, Vietnam Memorial, Fallen Guardian Memorial, Service Dog War Memorial, 9/11 Memorial, and others.
