Mobile Mardi Gras 2019 – Joe Cain, Moon Pies, and More!

Mobile Mardi Gras 2019Mardi Gras begins at 4:30pm on Friday, February 15th this year and ends on Tuesday, March 5th. Come celebrate in America’s original Carnival city during Mobile Mardi Gras 2019!

Mardi Gras has been celebrated around the world for centuries. It’s roots go all of the way back to the spring celebrations of the early-Romans. Then Medieval Catholicism updated the focus to the advent of Easter. All that was left after that was taking it to the New World, which Nicholas Langlois did right here in Mobile, in 1703, back when our city was the capital of Louisiana.

A lot of things have changed since that first Mobile Mardi Gras but we still celebrate and you’re most definitely invited!

If you’re looking for a more family-friendly place way enjoy the annual Carnival tradition, Mobile Mardi Gras is for you. While Mobile’s festivities offer plenty of adult fun, it doesn’t get as out of hand here as it can, in other cities like New Orleans.

Laissez les Bons Temps Rouler at Mobile Mardi Gras 2018!

Mobile Mardi Gras 2018New Orleans tends to get a lot of the attention but Mobile, AL is where America’s Carnival celebrations really began. The first North American Mardi Gras was celebrated here in 1703 – that’s 15 years before New Orleans even existed! Come experience Mardi Gras on its home turf, February 9th through the 13th at Mobile Mardi Gras 2018!

Mardi Gras is celebrated around the world and has been for time out of mind. The event’s origins go all of the way back to proto-Roman celebrations of spring. Over the intervening centuries, the event has evolved, with medieval Catholicism changing Mardi Gras focus to the advent of Easter.

Mobile’s claim to the origin of North American Mardi Gras celebrations has decent historical support. In fact, there are Mobile Mardi Gras tours that outline the history of Mobile and the birth of America’s Mardi Gras traditions. The Mobile Mardi Gras Trail is Mobile’s only historical walking tour.

When most of us think of Mardi Gras, visions of parades and beads and masks and … New Orleans come to mind, which is completely understandable but also misleading. Many think of New Orleans as the source of Mardi Gras in the US – when, in fact, that would be Mobile, AL.
