Tour the Past at Oakleigh Historic Complex

May 17, 2019 by Corey A. Edwards

Oakleigh Historic ComplexStep back in time at Oakleigh Historic Complex, home to Mobile’s oldest house museum, a Union barracks, the Cox-Deasy Cottage, and the Minnie Mitchell Archives.

Oakleigh House, constructed in 1833 by James W. Roper, was one of the first major residences to be built outside of the Mobile city limits. The mansion is one of the country’s rarest examples of Greek revival architecture and one of Alabama’s largest T-shaped homes. Oakleigh’s unique shape encourages a cooling cross-ventilation against the region’s notorious humidity.

The Oakleigh House and grounds remained in private hands until 1955, when the estate was purchased by the city of Mobile. The property had been kept in good working shape over the years. Consequently, the job of restoring it to its historic glory was not as difficult as it could have been and the results are stunning.

Visit a Mobile AL Brewery for Craft Beer Tastes and Tours

March 26, 2018 by Corey A. Edwards

Visit a Mobile AL Brewery for Craft Beer Tastes and ToursWhether you’re a craft beer enthusiast or just a locally-sourced food fan, you’ll be happy to know you can both sample and tour a Mobile AL brewery. The Mobile area has two breweries you can visit right now – with more on the way!

The craft beer brewing craze may seem like a fairly new thing but it’s really a return to a tradition. Back before prohibition, America, like the rest of the world sported a wide variety local and regional brewers. Tastes and traditions varied from state to state, town to town, brewer to brewer.

A return to many regional, small batch brewers enriches our country and makes travel that much more exciting. Craft brewers often offer limited and seasonal small-batch beers unavailable outside their tasting rooms. Most also have a limited distribution range, if any at all. This rarity makes the experience of visiting a craft brewery that much more memorable.

The Mobile AL brewery scene is small but growing.

Haint Blue Brewing Company ( ) is building a brewery and taproom in Mobile’s historic Crystal Ice House. It’s located at 806 Monroe Street and should be open sometime soon. Until then, you can enjoy a visit, taste, and tour at these other Mobile AL breweries.
