Mobile Mardi Gras 2019 - Joe Cain, Moon Pies, and More!

Mardi Gras begins at 4:30pm on Friday, February 15th this year and ends on Tuesday, March 5th. Come celebrate in America's original Carnival city during Mobile Mardi Gras 2019! Mardi Gras has been celebrated around the world for centuries. It's roots go all of the way back to the spring celebrations of the early-Romans. Then Medieval Catholicism updated the focus to the advent of Easter. All that was left after that was taking it to the New World, which Nicholas Langlois did right here in Mobile, in 1703, back when our city was the capital of Louisiana. A lot of things have changed since that first Mobile Mardi Gras but we still celebrate and you're most definitely invited! If you're looking for a more family-friendly place way enjoy the annual Carnival tradition, Mobile Mardi Gras is for you. While Mobile's festivities offer plenty of adult fun, it doesn't get as out of hand here as it can, in other cities like New Orleans.

Beyond being a little more friendly and a little less crazy, Mardi Gras in Mobile means Moon Pies. If you've been reading along with us, you'll already be aware of how the Moon Pie figures into the Mobile New Year's Eve celebrations. Well, that's not the only prominence Moon Pies have here in Mobile. "Krewe" members toss various "throws" into the crowd from their floats during Mardi Gras parades. Strings of bright plastic beads and charms are common at celebrations around the world. In Mobile, you'll also see Moon Pies, or "Mardi Gras Pies" being thrown to the crowd. Mardi Gras Pies are soft, round, delicious, and often come wrapped in a krewe’s emblem. Save 'em, eat 'em, throw them at someone else. It's all good! Then there's the tradition of Joe Cain Day. Joe Cain reinvigorated the Mobile Mardi Gras tradition in 1867 and received his own part of the celebrations in 1966. Joe Cain Day is held the Sunday before Fat Tuesday and has evolved into a kooky, but grand spectacle you don't want to miss. This year's Joe Cain Day is March 3rd.
